  4. • KIU can now be used to perform remote management of your Mac using a webbrowser. KIU has a tiny "embedded" webserver that allows you to remotely:
  5.       • restart/shutdown the Mac
  6.       • view, kill or restart running processes
  7.       • launch applications and execute Applescripts
  8.       • get some info about the system.

  10. • New, more user-friendly preferences dialog.

  12. • The "Quit" and "Preferences" menu items can be password protected, to prevent unauthorized tampering with KIU.

  14. • The "Keep Application In Front" feature is now only activated every 5 seconds, to prevent lockout situations. Note: in order for an application to be "kept in front", the alias must end with ".1" (dot one) unlike previous versions of KIU which merely required the alias to end with "1". This to prevent accidental activation of this feature.

  16. • The disk cache is now flushed before executing a non-clean or quick&dirty restart, which helps preserve data.

  18. • Important note: The "Keep It Up prefs" file is now called "KIU Preferences" and the "Keep It Up Items" folder is now called "KIU Startup Items". You will need to move the items from the old folder to the new folder. Remove the old folder and preferences file to avoid possible confusion.

  35. • Feature: "Keep Application in front". If the name of an alias in the KIU folder ends with a "1" (eg. webserv.1), this application will be kept in front of all other applications. This improves the performace of the selected application. Note: if you use this feature, set the "idle time before activation" to at least one minute, or KIU will drive you crazy when you are sitting at the computer.
  36. • Feature: "Delayed Launch". You can set a number of minutes before the initial launch of the KIU controlled applications. This way, the KIU Items folder can be used as  a "delayed startup items" folder.

  46. • Protected Quit.  If this option in the preferences is checked, the Quit Item in the File Menu will be disabled unless you hold down the shift key during menu selection. This is a safeguard to prevent KIU from being accidentally quit.

The version 1.3 archive contains an 68000 and PowerPC version of KIU.  This allows you to still run the 68K version on a PowerPC. The 68K version only uses 150Kb RAM versus 240Kb for the PowerPC version. Because KIU uses by nature very little processor power, there should not be much performance difference.

  54. • You can now specify 2 periods during which KIU will not attempt to launch any applications. This is useful for people who need some applications to quit for a certain period of time (e.g. a BBS application needs to quit when the computer communicates with other nodes to transfer mail). Read the new "KIU Scheduling" section in the manual.

  72. • You can now view the Keep It Up log file by selecting "Open Log File" from the file menu. This will launch TeachText and open the log file, so you must have TeachText (or localised equivalent for non-English systems) on your harddisk. This is done according to the new Macintosh philosophy of writing small specialised applications which are tied together by apple-events.
